Power Nap Scores Fifth Career Win

January 13, 2017 – Five-years-old and still going strong, Power Nap showed late speed to win Friday’s fourth, at Laurel Park, under the ride of jockey Feargal Lynch. The gelding romped by 5 ¼ lengths, tallying his fifth win since debuting back in September of 2014.

A field of seven loaded into the gate for the 5 ½ furlong dirt contest. Power Nap was sharp to leave the gate, but settled back into mid-pack while Eight Da Hardway and Daily News took to the lead. Posting relatively hot fractions of 22.88 and 46.90, Eight Da Hardway maintained command until about the three-eighths pole and then began to fade. Daily News struggled to hold his ground as Power Nap exploded past him and an ambitious but unsuccessful Joy Drive, blazing through five-furlongs in 58.39 and stopping the clock at 1:04.34. Joy Drive finished second while Daily News held on for third.

Power Nap was bred in Kentucky by Gary and Mary West Stables Inc. and is a son of Smart Strike and Windy, by Wild Rush. The dark brown gelding is owned by Robert Masiello and has been under the guidance of trainer Tom Morley since early 2016. Friday marked Power Nap’s 21st start, fifth career win, second win for Tom Morley and his first win at Laurel Park. His record currently stands 21-5-4-3, totaling earnings of $179,613.
