A native of Queensland, Australia, McLean has worked in the horse racing industry since the age of 14. He fell in love with sport when his mother and father took him to a yearling sale. From that point forward, he was hooked. While in school, McLean spent holidays working at Hallmark Stud in New Zealand – where, upon graduation, he returned for full-time work.

From 2015 to the summer of 2017, McLean spent time in Newmarket, England, working as Pupil Assistant to trainer Chris Wall. He had been wanting to come to the United States since he was 16 years old, so when a friend recommended he contact Tom Morley, he jumped on the opportunity. Today, McLean has taken on the role as Foreman for Team Morley, overseeing the day-to-day running of the shedrow. On his days off, Stephen McLean can be found watching a good game of rugby or cricket.
